I’ve dealt with a lot of companies large and small in my 35 years as a San
Francisco accountant and business advisor. All profess to want the best for their clients
and staff. Unfortunately, not all deliver on the promise.
Take caregivers for example. Some are of the lackadaisical “Just get it done”
variety. Others like Happy Caregivers believe that it’s vital to “Do whatever it takes to
make the client/patient well, comfortable and happy.”
In examining those companies that simply go through the motions of giving care
versus those like Happy Caregivers one thing constitutes an important difference:
training. Some other caregivers may be well-meaning but lack basic care skills. “Here’s
the client’s name,” they are told, “and be there by 8:30.” What’s the assignment? “Well,
do the laundry, fix lunch…and …and you’ll find out.” Awkward, uncomfortable for the
patient and not very happy for the caregiver.
What else can go wrong? I found many typical caregivers are not really pleased
with their jobs. And it shows! No smiles. No “What else can I do?” No cheerful attitude.
Maybe it’s a reflection of the typical caregivers’ income—or lack of it.
Last year I met a group of very professional, dedicated, compassionate
caregivers—many with more than twenty years’ experience. We discussed the need for
providing a superior home care service. And decided to do something about it. The
result: Happy Caregivers of Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties.
Why “happy”? Because if we were to help those who were at home needing
meal prep, companionship, light housekeeping, medications reminders and more, we
had to be happy…to make them happy! Simple facts, but something that was missing
too often by other companies in the field.
What makes a patient happy? An honest concern for his or her needs. And the
caregivers’ skills to accomplish what is needed—from bed making to Alzheimers and
dementia care. So we hired people who loved people, loved bringing joy to their
patient/friends. And if they needed a little extra training in our unique way of doing
things, we trained them.
What makes our caregivers really happy? Working with patients who appreciate
attention to detail…and making a reasonable income. You don’t get good people by
paying the least possible. So we made it a point to award talented caregivers with
Did that mean charging patients more so our staff could make more? No ! We
found that most insurance covers a patient’s basic costs. And that coupled with
efficiencies of operation learned over the years allow us to hold down our charges. If
fee flexibility is needed, we are flexible. Why? Because love and kindness have no
So the essential secrets of successful caregiving are:
*Hire only those who genuinely love to help people.
*See that they are thoroughly trained in all of the necessary skills.
*Pay the caregivers well.
